This essay intends to explain the role of the different functions of language in the development of artifacts; to do that, the author introduces the field of linguistics and its contributions to the study of signs. The article shows the application of the former to semiotics and its relevance for the assessment of contexts. The paper proceeds with an illustration of the links between semiotics and design and their relevance for the creative process and for the analysis of the communication process engendered by artifacts.
